The estate was founded in the 19th century, when the family’s first vigneron began cultivating the vines..
Robert Piollot (1930-2003), fourth generation, further developed the work before him. After decades of regional and global instability, he guided the domaine into its next phase. With land prices still relatively accessible in the 1950s, he worked alongside fellow growers in the Côte des Bar to deepen his understanding of grafting.
From this, he began establishing what would become a Piollot sélection massale — selecting cuttings from multiple high-performing, healthy vines within the estate and grafting them onto disease-resistant American rootstocks.
This approach preserved the genetic diversity and identity of the vineyard, strengthening its adaptability and character — a living legacy that continues more than sixty years later. Our Pinot Blanc from the parcel Colas Robin, hand-planted in 1955 by Robert, is still producing today.
A pioneer not only for our domaine but for the Côte des Bar region, Robert’s passing in 2003 prompted deep reflection for Roland and Dominique. It also brought renewed awareness to the long-term exposure risks associated with phytosanitary products — ultimately influencing the future direction of Champagne Piollot.
In 1986, Roland, his son, left school to return to the family estate, where he chose to dedicate 100% of the domaine’s production to Champagne—marking the true beginning of Piollot’s commercial journey.
In 2009, the estate began its transition to organic viticulture, achieving full certification in 2014. This commitment was further strengthened in 2019 with the acquisition of Demeter certification, reflecting the domaine’s adoption of biodynamic practices.
